Support for university students and researchers
Q&A
- Q1:What is the difference between a "student trainee" and an "intern"?
- A1:A student trainee conducts research for his or her thesis (bachelor's, master's or doctorate thesis) under the supervision of a RIKEN scientist. The student trainee receives no payment from RIKEN.
Under RIKEN's internship program, undergraduate, graduate, junior college and vocational school students carry out research under the supervision of RIKEN scientists. Interns work on RIKEN research and are therefore paid an internship allowance and payment for room and board. - Q2:What is RIKEN's visiting scientist program?
- A2:In this program, an individual affiliated with another institution is commissioned by RIKEN to work in collaboration with RIKEN scientists on RIKEN-related research. The visiting scientist does not have an employment contract with RIKEN and is treated as being on part-time status.
- Q3:Is it possible to get my degree at RIKEN?
- A3:No. RIKEN is not an academic institution and cannot award academic degrees. It is possible, however, to work on research related to your bachelor's, master's or doctorate thesis.
- Q4:Will I get academic credit for an internship or training program at RIKEN?
- A4:This will depend on your university's policies. Please consult your university administration.
- Q5:If I work as a student trainee or intern at RIKEN, will I have a chance to carry out research at an overseas institution?
- A5:RIKEN is involved in a variety of joint research projects with other institutions both inside and outside Japan. If it is necessary to your research, you may be assigned to work at one of these institutions.
- Q6:How long does the application process take?
- A6:The process takes about one month, so long as you meet all requirements and there are no errors in your paperwork.
- Q7:I lost my personal seal in the disaster. Will I need to affix my seal to the application forms?
- A7:Your seal is required for some of the forms, but this requirement can be waived so long as there is email or other documentation with which we can confirm necessary information.
