BSI Group Director Katsuhiko Mikoshiba will be presented with the Naito Memorial Award for his work "Studies on the development and differentiation of the central nervous system - discovery of IP3 receptor and analysis of its function". A presentation ceremony will be held in Tokyo in March.
Summary:

By detailed analysis of the behavior and morphogenesis of normal mice compared with mutant mice, Dr. Mikoshiba succeeded in correlating behavior, morphology and molecules. With a unique method of analysis, he analyzed the molecular mechanism of neuronal positioning, lobule formation of the brain, myelination, and neural induction.
One of his pioneering works was the discovery of the IP3 receptor. He also found that the IP3 receptor is a calcium channel and is located at the endoplasmic reticulum inside the cell. He found that calcium release from endoplasmic reticulum through the IP3 receptor is essential for various phenomena in living systems. Some of the results are listed in the figure.
