PKU-CCAST-RIKEN Joint Conference
A joint conference was held at Peking University on November 10, 2006, by Peking University (PKU), CCAST (China Center of Advanced Science and Technology), and RIKEN.
RIKEN has been promoting research cooperation between Japan and China for a long time. We were able to hold this joint conference in China thanks to the great help of Prof. T. D. Lee, former director of the RIKEN BNL Research Center. One purpose of the conference was to take advantage of Prof. Lee's stay in China to strengthen research collaboration between China and Japan.
In the morning there were introductory speeches about the prospects for further cooperation between the three institutes, by Dr. Xu, President of Peking University; Dr. Lin, Executive Vice President of Peking University; Mr. Ma, Deputy Director-General of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology; and Dr. Takeda, RIKEN Executive Director.
In the keynote speech, Prof. Lee spoke about the setting up of the RIKEN BNL Research Center, and research collaboration between Japan and the U.S. in nuclear physics. Dr. Takeda gave an introduction to RIKEN, and talked about the Noyori Initiative, RIKEN's international strategies, its new China Office, its research centers, the current state of its cooperation with China, and its systems for training and employing foreign scientists. Speeches on the overall picture and the future of Sino-Japanese collaboration were given by Dr. Shen, Vice Chair of the National Natural Science Foundation of China; Dr. Zhang, Academician in the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Dr. Lin.
In the afternoon, there were three panel discussions, on physics, chemistry, and life sciences. Speakers from RIKEN and China gave talks on each topic. At the start of the physics panel discussion, there was also a signing ceremony for the new Memorandum of Understanding between the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science and the Chinese Nuclear Physics Society, on the creation of the council for China-Japan research collaboration on nuclear physics. All three of the panel discussions saw lively debates.
At the reception, the organizers expressed satisfaction with the success of the conference, and congratulations were offered to Prof. Lee on his 80th birthday this month. Dr. Takeda also announced that the Japanese government had awarded Prof. Lee the Gold and Silver Star of the Order of the Rising Sun.
It is hoped that this conference will lead to even more scientific collaboration between RIKEN and China in the future.
