Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visit RIKEN

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the Wako campus on Tuesday October 3, 2006. Their Majesties were firstly given an introduction to RIKEN by Ryoji Noyori, President, Koji Kaya, Director of the Wako Institute, and Kohei Tamao, Director of the Frontier Research System. They then visited the Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science, and inspected the Superconductive Ring Cyclotron (SRC). Researchers told them about the discovery of element 113 and how they use heavy ion beams to improve plant breeds. Their Majesties also inspected several laboratories in the Brain Science Institute and received explanations about functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), research on Alzheimer's Disease, structural analysis of the cerebral cortex, and research on nerve cells using fluorescent proteins obtained from corals.
