RIKEN Kobe Institute Director Takeichi Awarded 2005 Japan Prize |

On April 20, RIKEN Kobe Institute Director Masatoshi Takeichi and two other recipients were presented the Japan Prize and its accompanying cash award by Masao Ito, Chairman of the Science and Technology Foundation of Japan, at a ceremony in Tokyo's National Theater attended by the Emperor and Empress, the speakers of the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors, and numerous other dignitaries. After the award ceremony, there was a commemorative concert of music selected by each of the three recipients. Director Takeichi listened to his choice of Mahler's Fifth Symphony while seated next to the Empress in the first row on the second floor of the concert hall. Asked why he had chosen this particular symphony, Director Takeichi replied, "I find this piece both exciting and healing."
