To apply to become an IPA

Qualifications
(1) In principle, candidates must be of foreign nationality and under the age of 35.
(2) Candidates must have a masters degree (or must expect to be awarded a masters degree by this date).

Duration
In principle, the IPA program is limited to a maximum of 3 years.

Remuneration
A daily living allowance of 5,200 yen per day.
Residence free of charge in RIKEN campus housing for the duration of the IPA's stay at RIKEN. When campus housing is unavailable, RIKEN may pay a housing allowance of up to 70,000 yen per month. (The IPA must pay his or her own utility costs.)
Roundtrip transportation between RIKEN and the IPA's home country.

Procedures

Within Japan

Please start by referring to the application guidelines for the collaborating Japanese university.
Candidate confirms university's graduate school admission requirements relating to the joint graduate school program with RIKEN and the position of IPA

Candidate fills out graduate school application documents

RIKEN IPA Degree Review Subcommittee screens applications

Candidate submits graduate school application documents to the university

Only those students recommended by the Subcommittee take the university's graduate school entrance exam

Student is designated as a RIKEN IPA only after successfully passing the graduate school entrance requirements

Overseas

Going through his or her supervising professor at the graduate school, the candidate contacts the RIKEN collaborating laboratory

Screening of applicants by individual RIKEN centers and institutes

Signing of Agreement for International Joint Graduate School Program between overseas graduate school and RIKEN

Acceptance as an IPA
