Visiting scientist programs
Position Objective Qualifications Period of employment
Senior Visiting Scientist To effectively promote research and other related work at RIKEN by employing scientists and technicians who have high research abilities and have produced impressive results for fixed terms Persons who can take leading roles in parts of RIKEN's research and take partial charge of projects Maximum 1 year
Visiting Scientist Persons who can carry out research under RIKEN's research collaboration agreements or joint research contracts
Visiting Technician Persons who can carry out technical work for research under RIKEN's research collaboration agreements or joint research contracts
Visiting Researcher Persons who can carry out research and who receive financial support from public research funding organizations Maximum 1 year

Contract programs

Contract Researcher Employ researchers and technicians from within RIKEN and outside under contracts, for efficient research at RIKEN Researchers from Japan or overseas who have high-level research ability and impressive records. Full-time; foreigners can be employed under this program. 1 year; maximum total 3 years
Contract Technical Scientist Technicians from Japan or overseas who have high-level research ability and impressive records. Full-time; foreigners can be employed under this program.

Research trainee programs
Position Objective Qualifications Period of employment
Company-Sponsored Research Trainee RIKEN takes on Company-Sponsored Research Trainees in response to requests from companies, under commissioned research contracts or Company-Sponsored Research Trainee contracts Persons who will study research or technology in specific fields. Full-time; in response to requests from companies. 1 year; maximum total 3 years
Research Fellow RIKEN takes on researchers in response to requests from universities and research institutions Persons who can collaborate in the promotion of research. In response to requests from universities and other research institutions. Up to 1 year; renewal possible
Student Trainee RIKEN takes on students in response to requests from universities etc. Students who are working on their graduation theses or master's or doctoral courses. In response to requests from universities etc. Up to 1 year; renewal possible
Intern Training in the work of the research institute, in response to requests from universities etc. Students from vocational colleges, colleges, universities, or university graduate schools in Japan or overseas. In response to requests from universities etc. May be part of a program where the training earns credit in the university course. Up to 1 year; reemployment possible
