RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science

Director
Hideto EN' YO (D.Sci.)
In 1931, Dr. Yoshio Nishina's laboratory was established in RIKEN. For 80 years since then, RIKEN has continued to promote accelerator-based science in Japan and maintained its position as the world's front runner in the field. In 2007, RIKEN will commemorate the 70th year since Dr. Yoshio Nishina's cyclotron, the first in Japan, began operation in 1937. In the Nishina spirit, RIKEN has made many long, successful strides in cyclotron history, and the commissioning of the RI Beam Factory (RIBF) will truly represent a new dimension to this proud tradition.
In 2006, RIBF with its world's first superconducting ring cyclotron, SRC, and superconducting RI-beam separator, BigRIPS, started a full-scale operation. RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science (RNC) was established to comprehensively support and promote accelerator-based research at this world-class top performing facility.
RIBF has been made available to the worldwide user community since 2007. Its superconducting ring cyclotron will exhibit a much higher level of heavy-ion acceleration power than any in cyclotron history, and in combination with the superconducting RI-beam separator, will single-handedly expand the world of nuclear research to a presently unreachable horizon. The new capabilities and capacities it offers will no doubt fascinate and attract a large number of nuclear experimentalists and theorists from all over the world.
RNC has as its core mission the development, implementation, and the research use of forefront accelerator technology towards the fundamental science into the origin and properties of matter, and the potential application of such findings to the key challenges facing society today in health, economic well-being, and a sustainable environment.
