Evolution and Development of the turtle shell: Although the carapace of the turtle is established on the bases of ribs that have expanded laterally, it occupies a peculiar position in the body with respect to surrounding structures such as muscles and scapula. Evolution of carapace thus appears to have been brought about by topographical changes in developmental patterning of the mesoderm of this animal.
