Research Areas

Our group aims at utilizing the Pressurized Vessel and the Exposed Facility of the Japan Experimental Module "Kobo", which in turn comprises the International Space Station. The utilization of the Exposed Facility has already been initiated by the MAXI (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image) instrument launched in the summer of 2009, followed by a candidate project, EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory), which is currently being developed under international collaboration. The Pressurized Vessel may be used for a wide variety of micro-gravity researches in RIKEN, such as biomedical studies using microscopes and other means, as wellas material science including protain crystallization.

Research Subject

  1. Operation and data release of the MAXI mission onboard the International Space Station
  2. JEM-EUSO(Extreme Universe Space Observatory) mission
  3. Feasibility study of biomedical and material researches using the microgravity environment
