Discovery of novel light sources expands science horizon and creates new scientific research fields. Unexplored wavelength regions of the light spectrum (extreme wavelength) have long been seen as areas of new potential for the promotion of scientific and industrial development. We pursue the potential of novel light sources now under development at RIKEN, such as intense soft-x-ray attosecond pulse, near-field photons and tera-hertz light waves. Those extreme light infrastructures play key roles in creating new optical science fields of atto-photonics, nano-photonics and tera-photonics, which are comprised in Extreme Photonics. Our efforts to explore new scientific fields through these light sources and applying them in the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering, biology and medicine is enhanced by the advantages of using equipment provided by the RIKEN research complex.
