Research Areas

"Chemical Biology" approaches biological questions using chemistry techniques. The approach enables us to understand the complex biological systems which have previously been considered difficult in molecular biology, thus has a great potential for contribution toward the discoveries of new phenomena and mechanisms. We aim to integrate approaches from such disparate fields as chemistry, molecular biology, glycobiology and structural biology into our chemical biology research and reveal some of the mysteries of biological systems. To this end we are engaged in constructing a chemical library of microbial metabolites, and creating a chemical array that can perform robust and rapid screening. We also aim to reveal the mechanisms of post-translational modification and quality control of proteins, an important question to be answered in the post-human genome project era. We hope also to learn to regulate such activities.
