| Overview of Laboratory |
RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences (Acting Director: Shigeo KOYASU) will begin operations on April 1, 2013. The new center will undertake basic research on homeostasis and human genetic research in order to reveal new paradigms for realizing personalized medicine, while also contributing to applied medicine in terms of disease prevention and treatment with basic research focused on understanding genetic diversity in the human race. Additionally, the new center will promote the translation of research findings to clinical practice.
The center's Laboratory for International Alliance on Genomic Research(tentative) is looking for ambitious persons to fill the positions of Research Scientist, Postdoctoral Researcher and/or Research Associate. For the further development of genomic research to realize personalized medicine, "Core for Genomic Medicine" aims to: (1) develop innovative technologies and systems that encompass and elucidate the diversity in the human genome and construct a research infrastructure of the human genome variation, and (2) develop statistical analysis methods for the multifactorial diseases, by combining systematic SNP information and whole-genome analysis information with various environmental factors. Furthermore, we will identify disease- and drug-related genes using molecular genetic approaches as well as undertake clinical translational research using the identified disease- and drug-related genes for the realization of personalized medicine. Note that the subject disorders may change depending on the finalized budget for fiscal 2013. The immediate goals are for project-based research in the following areas: cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, bone and joint diseases, respiratory and allergic diseases, endocrinology, metabolic and kidney diseases, and digestive diseases. The main aim of our laboratory is, through collaborations in Japan and internationally, to identify useful biomarkers which could be used to predict drug-induced adverse events, guide drug use and be used in disease prediction diagnosis. |
