Seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher
Laboratory Ulmer Initiative Research Unit, Advanced Science Institute
(Unit leader: Stefan Ulmer)
Research Field Our research focusses on the ultra-high precision measurement of the magnetic moment of the antiproton, which is currently known at a relative precision of 10-3 only. Applying our measuring method, the precision can be increased by at least a factor of 100. The experiment will be performed with a single particle stored in a cryogenic Penning trap.
Job Description Job category: RIKEN ASI Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Researcher.

Candidates are expected to work independently and dedicated on the development of an apparatus to measure the magnetic moment of the antiproton with high precision.

Possible projects:
1) Design of a Double Penning Trap System for the measurement of the magnetic moment of the antiproton.
2) Simulation and design of a cryogenic beamline to guide antiprotons into a Penning trap.
3) Design of low-noise amplifiers (MHz), ssb converters (MHz) and precision voltage sources.
Qualification We are seeking for PhD holders who have expertise on mechanical engineering, cryogenic engineering, low-noise electronics, superconducting electronics, Penning traps, beam-lines, UHV, FEM simulations, potential-theory. Technical skills are welcome.
Employment Location RIKEN, 2-1 Hirosawa, Wako, Saitama 351-0198, Japan (The successful candidate will be ordered by supervisor to go on a long-term business trip to CERN in Geneva/Switzerland.)
Salary Full-time position with an annually renewable contract (maximum August 2013) upon evaluation. Salary will be based on qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances provided. Social insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Days off are weekends, public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29-Jan. 3) and RIKEN Foundation Day. These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
Also, eligible for an exemption from repayment for category 1 scholarship loans provided by the Japan Student Services Organization before fiscal year 2003, and eligible applying for the MEXT Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Kakenhi).
