Chemical reactions are driven by electrons, which are much lighter than nuclei in molecules. For understanding the origin of transformation of nuclear geometry and elucidating intricate and useful solvent effects on a chemical reaction, real-time observation of ultrafast changes of the electronic state in reacting molecules is essential. Thus, we carry out ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy on chemical reactions in the gas and solution phases using femtosecond ultraviolet lasers, extreme ultraviolet and X-ray free electron lasers, and soft X-ray synchrotron radiation at SPring-8. Chemical reaction dynamics studies using state-of-the-art photon sources at RIKEN allow us unprecedented access to the ultrafast dynamics of electrons in chemical reactions.
