RIKEN BioResource Center

Bioresource Information Division

Head: Kaoru Fukami (Ph.D.)
Kaoru Fukami(Ph.D.)

Due to the recent advances in the genome analysis, various kinds of research resources such as DNA clones, cell lines, and genetically modified organisms have been and are still being exhaustively developed. According as the bioresources are accumulated in the field of life science, their information is also accumulated so enormously that we cannot utilize it without information technology.
The Bioresource Information Division collects information on whereabouts and characteristics of bioresources of RIKEN BRC, constructs databases, and offers the bioresource information to research community in the form of bio-digital-contents such as a web-based catalog. Through these activities, the division aims to contribute to the advancement of life science.
The division also works on consolidating the databases and on linking them to other biological databases in and outside Japan in order that more information related to the retrieved bioresources can be obtained. In addition, it works on developing new technology to extract biologically significant information from various experimental data obtained from many kinds of bioresources.

Research Subjects

  • Construction and management of bioresource databases
  • Dissemination of bioresource information through the databases and their search engines
  • System development and maintenance for facilitating bioresource acquisition
  • Development of technology to construct consolidated bioresource databases
  • Development of technology for bioresource information analysis
