About the Associate Chief Scientist Program

RIKEN created the position of Associate Chief Scientist in fiscal 2006 as a complement to the already existing position of Chief Scientist. The position is meant to develop the next generation of leaders in science and technology by encouraging original research undertaken with a long-term perspective. This position enables researchers to make the most of RIKEN's various research facilities inside and outside Japan, and its network of RIKEN laboratories covering a broad range of research fields.

Research field is not specified. We require the applicant to pioneer his or her own curiosity-driven interdisciplinary research field.

Qualifications

Self-disciplined scientists with a long-term vision of the next generation of scientific endeavor, and with the ability and research record to preside over their own autonomous laboratories will be considered as candidates for this position (those with less than 10 years since getting their PhDs)

Budget, rights and responsibilities

  1. 100 million yen to start and maintain a new laboratory, to be distributed over a period of 5 years
  2. The Associate Chief Scientist is eligible to apply for competitive funding from within and outside RIKEN.
  3. The right to appoint fixed-term researchers; host Special Postdoctoral Researchers and Junior Research Associates; and apply for the purchase of commodities, research funds, and laboratory space.
  4. The responsibility to oversee the work of all laboratory members; manage the laboratory budget; and manage the maintenance and use of all laboratory equipment and instruments.
  5. The Associate Chief Scientist does not have the right to appoint tenured researchers. (However, a scientist who is already a tenured researcher at RIKEN can transfer to a laboratory headed by an Associate Chief Scientist.)

Personal information

Submitted documents will be handled in accordance with the RIKEN rules concerning personal information, and only used for screening applications for this position. Personal information will not be disclosed, transferred, or lent to any third party without a justifiable reason.

Selection process

Candidates selected in an initial screening of submitted documents will be asked to make a presentation sometime on November 26, 2013.
All candidates will be notified of pass-fail results. (Notification will be sent to the email address given on Form 1.) No information can be released regarding application status or evaluation details prior to, during, or after the evaluation process. All decisions are final once announced.

April 1, 2014 (in principle)

Type of employment and location

Fulltime, tenured position, subject to RIKEN's mandatory retirement age of 60.
Laboratory location will be decided according to the nature of the research undertaken and in consultation with center directors and others.

Remuneration

Annual salary (with an incentive bonus system)
A commuting allowance and a housing allowance are available. Social insurance is applicable. Days off are Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, New Year period (29 Dec-3 Jan) and RIKEN Foundation Day. Other conditions as stipulated in RIKEN regulations. Dues will be deducted for mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).
Recipients of JASSO category 1 scholarship loans may be eligible to have loan repayments waived (those awarded through FY2003).
Eligible to apply for external funding (kakenhi grants-in-aid and the like).
